Willow Weaving Workshop

Experience Willow weaving under and around the encampment of Vidor Vidor (the name is from old Norse, meaning Willow, the forest warrior) from Svartland Vikings. You'll spend an hour (may be more if required) making at least a pair of rattles.   The activity is suitable for those with experience of willow weaving. The age is from 16 and above.

If you wish to personalise your rattles bring small round stones from home, (about the size of marbles.  The size of stones used cause different pitch notes. Other natural materials could be used such as hazel nuts, small conkers, etc.

I will supply 7 small glass stones, or 7 larger clay stones for each rattle. If making for a baby less stones should be used. The rattle is woven from 7 rods with an eight-rod locking the handle together. The handle must be glued in place, as the willow will shrink by a ninth as it dries, making the handle loose. The handle rod can be replaced after 3 months if you do not wish to use glue.

The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). In combination with the herb's powerful anti-inflammatory plant compounds (called flavonoids), salicin is thought to be responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb. Which is one of the reasons willow rattles have been given to teething babies in years gone by

It's an amazing experience under one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He even got our 21month old to help make a unicorn so we cannot, personally, recommend this experience enough. Chris made our little one a rattle when she was born and she still loves playing with it to this day.

The session will last max 1 hour 45 min and will start at 16:00 and finish by 17:45 Friday 26th July 2024.
