Henefetafl Game Workshop

Ever wanted to learn how to play the famous Henefetafl Viking Game? This is your chance: A dedicated workshop for you to learn how to play and understand the well-known Norse strategy game Hnefatafl often referred to as Viking chess.
Hnefatfal is a game embedded in Norse culture, it has a place in the sagas, and was such an integral part of its culture that game boards and pieces have been regularly found in several burials.  

You'll be introduced to Hnefatafl, its history, who played it, what makes it special.
How to play Hnefatafl what we understand of the rules and the common ones in play today.

Gain an insight into one of the world's most unique and ancient strategy games that the Vikings used to hone their strategic warfare skills.
You'll learn the game's straightforward rules and get to play with a friend or other enthusiasts to practise Hnefatafl tactics and better understand the ancient game in a series of structured games.
We will also cover why Hnefatafl was a key part of Norse culture and its role in Viking life.

If you take to Hnefetfl and it's a challenge you want to master you'll be able to buy your own board after the workshop, basic boards start from £15.

The session will start at 17:30  and last about 1h-1h:30min Saturday 26th July 2025.

The workshop will start promptly at 17:30. Please arrive on time for the workshop as arriving late may impact your ability to keep up with the group or may lead to missing out on some of the fun as you can lost your space if you're more than 15min late.

T&Cs

You must be 10 or older to join this workshop. If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop.

You must hold a valid Festival ticket for the day you are joining the workshop. You cannot attend any workshops or participate in any activities without a ticket that gains you entrance to the festival on the given day.

Upon purchase, you'll receive your payment/booking confirmation. You'll be on an access list when you partake so you just need proof that you're who booked when attending the experience and sign in with Wayne directly before the workshop.

You may be able to join on the day if there are any spaces left or if there are any last minute cancellations, however please note that this is very unlikely. Just ask at the workshop entrance if there are still any spaces available.

Richard reserves the right to deny participation to anyone he deems unsuitable to take part due to, but not limited to, attitude, state of sobriety, age, inadequate supervision. If you are deemed unsuitable to participate for any reason, you will not receive a refund so please arrive in an adequate state to be a part of the workshop.
